 | | The Baranov Museum is housed in one of only four Russian-built structures remaining in the United States today. Built by Aleksandr Baranov in the early 1800's as a fur warehouse, it is the only log building remaining in Kodiak on its original site.It holds the distinction of being the only Russian structure to warehouse the commercial activities of both the Russian American Company and the Alaska Commercial Company. These enterprises shaped the face of northwestern America through commerce, administration, law enforcement and exploration.Wilbur J. Erskine, an employee of the Alaska Commercial Co., and his wife, Nellie, made this building their home from 1911 until his death in 1948. In 1962, a study recommended the house as being of value for illustrating the history of the United States, and thus it became a National Historic Landmark. The Kodiak Historical Society saved this building from threat of demolition after the 1964 earthquake and tsunami. Through their efforts it was leased for use as a museum in 1967. The Kodiak Historical Society has worked to upgrade, renovate and preserve this log structure. |
