Afognak Island State Park encompasses about 75,000 acres on the north and east sides of Afognak Island, which is located just north of Kodiak. The park is known for its rugged topography, dense old-growth Sitka spruce forests, and salmon spawning habitat. Kodiak brown bear, Sitka black-tailed deer, Roosevelt elk, and the endangered marbled murrelet inhabit the park.
Visitors can fish, hunt, hike, or just enjoy the pristine environment. There are two public use cabins in the park. One is on the south shore of Pillar Lake and the other is at Laura Lake, east of Perenosa Bay on the northern end of Afognak Island. Both are restored U.S. Forest Service cabins.

Facilities: Groceries and other supplies must be purchased before arriving on Afognak. There are no campsites available, however, there are two public use cabins that are available for rent.

Reservations: Reservations are needed to rent one of the two public use cabins located inside the State Park.

Best Time To Visit: Unknown

Fees: A fee is charged to rent one of the four public use cabins located inside the State Park.

Accessibility: Unknown

Rules: Visitors should be as self-sufficient as possible; assistance could be hours or days away. Those who have planned their trip carefully find the greatest rewards.

Directions: Access to Afognak Island is via water or air. Commercial air service is available from Anchorage to the city of Kodiak. Several air charters provide float plane service to Afognak Island from either Kodiak or Homer.
