The Selawik Wild River provides river floating, sport fishing, and hunting opportunities and is about 360 mile northwest of Fairbanks. The refuge is composed of estuaries, lakes, river deltas, and tundra slope. The most prominent feature is the extensive system of tundra wetlands nestled between the Waring Mountains and the Selawik Hills. Selawik is the Inupial word for "place of sheefish."
